The CPSA Academy provides information about the latest development in coaching and training for everyone with a passion to learn how to shoot!

Committee

Chairman Graham EvansGraham Evans Is the Chairman for the Shropshire Clay Pigeon Shooting Association, in the year 2000 he moved to Shropshire from the Staffordshire/Shropshire border after retiring from his job as a Gamekeeper/Stalker.

He has been involved with shooting since he was a boy, and has represented, the West Midlands Area, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Wales and hopes to get into the Great Britain team in 2007.

His first title win was in 1974 winning the West Midlands Sporting Championship, after shooting off against John Wells, a very accomplished and well respected sporting shot, they still recall the moment when they bump into each other.

John Wells was one of the people that he revered as was Wally Sykes and Joe Kitson, these shots seemed to have all the time in the world to take their shots and always seemed so relaxed, even in competition, they are great ambassadors for our sport and were an inspiration to him as a young man taking up the sport of clay pigeon shooting.

The hunger to be a winner is always with him, but he feels that you have to be gracious in defeat before you become a good winner, you see such a lot of bad losers while on the circuit, we all like to win, but it’s not the end of the world if we don’t, it’s a sport after all, so we should enjoy each outing with good company and a good atmosphere, whether we win or not.

Graham is a referee and coaches quite a fair amount and says that you do see some characters who will never set the world on fire but do enjoy themselves, which is what it’s all about, isn’t it?

If you are at a shoot that he is attending and want to have a chin wag, then go over and introduce yourself, I am sure he will have something in common to talk about, thank you for taking the time to visit this site.

Vice Chairman Alan EllisonAlan is an instructor at the West Midlands Shooting Ground, and shoots all the trap disciplines, he has shot sporting in the past but now prefers the trap events.

As vice chairman of the SCPSA, Alan’s role is to take over from the chairman if he is unable to fulfil his role in anyway, i.e. holidays, illness or unavailability to attend the meetings and to give support to the rest of the committee.

You will see Alan at various grounds, Mid Wales, Llandegla, Rugby and Sealands to name but a few.

Alan was a member of the victorious veteran DTL team that won at Mid Wales in 2005 at the Inter Counties, and he is an invaluable member of the Shropshire trap teams, and is always a consistent shot.

The cartridge gun combination that Alan uses varies from time to time as he uses his Perrazi and his Beretta to good effort, the cartridges also vary as he has no set brand that he uses. He tends to give the clays a good grinding with whatever he shoots at.

Alan is a very knowledgeable coach and very interesting to speak to, so have a chat and say hello to him if you see him around the grounds.

Secretary Alan RowleyAlan Rowley is our county secretary and a member of the various Inter County teams, as he shoots all the disciplines, even Helice (ZZ).

The Great Britain Helice team had a new recruit in 2006 as Alan qualified to go to the European championship in Portugal in June, and gave a good account of himself even though he was in with the big boys of Helice shooting.

Alan has spent most of his working life driving tankers and major size lorries and for the last seventeen years working in the health and safety industry of which he has a wealth of knowledge.

Alan has owned a Beretta for many years but the gun Alan uses most these days is an Mk 38 trap gun bored ¾ & full, his cartridges are Express High Velocity 7 1/2s, to which he puts to good use decimating the targets.

He can be seen at grounds all over the country, as said before he shoots all the disciplines, Alan also represents the county at inter county level and has been the Olympic skeet captain & manager for the past two years.

Alan is always willing to hear about any ideas that the membership may have to improve on the running of the SCPSA, so if you bump into him at a shoot say hello, and give him your ideas.

Treasurer Josie EvansJosie Evans, wife to our chairman has been involved with clay shootings since meeting up with Graham over 40 years ago. Even then Graham was well into clay shooting and she says it was just natural to join him on days out shooting mainly skeet and sporting targets at local clubs, i.e. Bordesley & Redditch and Worcester gun club.

Being married to a gamekeeper and working as his under keeper you are living with shooting twenty four seven and at times it can get a little too much as you are never away from it, especially when your old man is addicted to all forms of shooting as Josie's is.

Josie no longer shoots, but she says she enjoys the odd day out as a spectator. When she was shooting she enjoyed sporting and her favourite target was the bolting rabbit, as you could see where you were if you missed it.

Nowadays Josie is responsible for the financial side of the Shropshire CPSA as she took over the roll of treasurer in January of 2007 and is keen to put something back into a sport which has played such a large part in her married life.

Apart from polishing the many trophies that come into the Evans household from hubby's triumphs, Josie likes to potter about in the garden and has recently taken up knife throwing which she enjoys tremendously, she hasn't tried tomahawks yet but is keen to do so. She says the old man better watch out when he upsets me in the future, as it mat not be the usual pots and pans thrown at him anymore.

Promotions Officer Kieron PartonHello fellow shooters and welcome.  I have been involved in shooting from the age of eight and that really is a long time ago.
I started clay shooting in 1993 and have focused mostly on this in recent years.
After a happy and successful career in the Special Steels industry, I have been lucky enough to be able to spend more time on those activities that are both enjoyable and rewarding.
During the week (Winter months not so often), I can be found at Griffin-Lloyd, WMSG Hodnet, Mid-Wales SC, Millride CS and other locations, sometimes with clients and friends or at odd times having a solo blast to sharpen up on a problem target.  If you are not yet a CPSA Member, or are coming back into shooting, then SCPSA are here to help. Just call, e-mail or approach me and ask for details. We are always here to help you.

News

Junior winner, Owen HufferShropshire shooters attended the county double rise championships held at Bridgnorth gun club on Sunday 15 June, the ground had set up one layout showing very good targets which were to test the shooters to the limit, for a change the weather was kind to us with little or no wind and sunny skies, which made a change on this exposed site.

Shaun Gardener set the pace after the first round scoring 42 x 50, Graham Evans was hot on his heels with a 41 and ‘ The Legend ‘ we all know as Brian Bradley had yet to shoot.

After the final round it was our county chairman who was leading the field on an 82 x 100, with Shaun on an 81, up stepped Brian knowing what he had to beat, a 42 in his first 50 targets kept him in contention and after leaving his safety catch on and losing a pair of birds due to this he scored a 41 to finish on a total score of 83 x 100 and added his name to the trophy for the twenty second time, junior shooter Owen Huffer picked up the junior title for 2008 with a score of 73 x 100.

Running along side of the main event was a 25 bird DTL which was shot by  quite a few shooters and was won on a 25/75 by Graham Evans and Steve Trow, who shared the prize money, also in the money on the day was Lawrence Wright who is still getting to grips with his new Perazzi and is steadily gaining respectable scores with it.

European Colts

Owen HufferFourteen year old Owen Huffer from Ludlow won the European Colts DTL Championship at the Mid Wales shooting centre on 2/3 August, he is the first Shropshire colt ever to win this title.

Owen is having a super season so far and is sponsored by Top Gun clothing at present, plus he is in talks with a major gun maker about having a new gun and a supply of cartridges to further support him for the future, we wish him every success !
